It is recommended that you read most of the pages from the Basic Concepts section. Whilst polliwog can be used virtually "out of the box", to get the most out of it you will need to perform some configuration that is suitable to your log file.

It is recommended that you read about the following topics:
  • Object Model - provides details about the objects used to model the log information. Since polliwog uses External site, opens in new window JoSQL extensively understanding the object model is critical to getting the most out of polliwog.
  • Hit Filtering - the hit filter is the object that decides which hits should be included in the statistics produced by polliwog. In general, filtering occurs by date, i.e. only include hits with a certain date range, but other criteria is possible.
  • Page Resolution - the page resolver tells polliwog what hits should be considered as pages and what should not. polliwog bases the statistics on pages and pages are added to visits. Most of the time pages are determined by their file extension, html, php, jsp and so on but other criteria is possible.
  • Page Title Resolution - polliwog is able to resolve urls into page titles, however to do so it needs mapping information between urls and the title. To get the most out of polliwog page title resolution is vital since it turns unreadable urls into human readable titles.
  • Site Areas - a site area is a logical grouping of urls within your site, this grouping is then given a name. For instance you may have a Products area of your site, it is useful to know how many visitors went to that area of your site.
